My abstract paintings explore how color impacts mood and emotion. I try to evoke a feeling and sense of place. I like the transformative process of using hot wax and a torch to blend color and reveal new images and textures beneath the surface. Using a diverse range of materials—oil stick, acrylic paint, crayons, found objects, and hot and cold wax on canvas, board and tar paper—I experiment how each medium influences texture, form, and composition. Vibrant colors are central to my work, adding depth and emotion.
My paintings focus on simplicity, color, and form. My encaustic works on tar paper manipulate the layers and under paintings beneath the composition. This technique is inspired from my early studies of etching in Italy, where layering and unveiling images are central to the printmaking process.
My work is experimental and exploratory inspired by the earth’s jewel tones. Living in northern California, surrounded by rich, spacious landscapes, I draw inspiration from simplicity, quiet, and the vastness of the environment.
